    Accepting every load...

I've heard and been told similar at different places I've worked for. I do accept a very high percentage of runs offered. I do chase. Yes I've done more DH than the loaded miles (don't get upset ppl or laugh too hard). There is a method to my madness. FIrst let me say that every broker must...

Everyone else??? You mean limit them thar politicians to only 105kph??? Hahahaha fat chance!!! Sorry only trucks! Remember trucks don't have to get there that fast. There be too many on the road so everyone is getting freight on time... didn't you know that??? Nope them politicians haveto...

    Canada New Laws In Canada

Alrighty, for your info... In Manitoba please remember the new law that affects all of us. When on the road and you come upon an emergency vehicle at the side of the road, you must: 1: REDUCE SPEED!! yes you have to slowdown (try at least 20-30kph or 15-20mph) 2: GIVE ROOM this means change...

    Canada May 24 Weekend

Ok the official name for the holiday is Victoria Day. Celebrating the longest reigning monarch. However for Canucks it is normally called the May 24 weekend. A 2 4 is a normal 24 pack of beer. This is the weekend that everyone with a cottage goes to it and opens up for the summer season...

    Canada May 24 Weekend

Well trust the Canadians to name a holiday weekend after a case of beer!!! Great way to start the summer. Too bad it's so cool again. Well I'm sitting after doing a small load Saturday so I'm making a new centre console. Beer helps make the job easier. Rob Fis

Working for more than one company

I know a fellow doing it now. The problem he is encountering is that the first company is getting a little tired of his not being available when loads are. One day he was offered a load in the morning, turned it down after accepting and did the samething in the afternoon. COmpany hired another...

    the future of expediting

The good old days!!! Back in the 90's Atripco (courier co.) in Toronto had several Vespas with a little larger box than the one pictured. They used them in the city core. They didn't last too long! The winter I suspect was hard on them. Thanks for the laugh!! Rob Fis

last stages of starting up what more do I need?

RE: last stages of starting up what more do I need Just to cover a couple of points 1: If your Dodge has an automatic trans then install a huge trtans cooler and change the fluid often. If a standard follow maint schedules. 2: Get both chains and straps and as Greg says look at yearly replace...

    Outrageous Tolls

Wow haven't been into NYC for awhile. I heard the tolls were up but not that much. Guess it'll be awhile before I go there. Hey Greg I had similar at Detroit-Windsor. One charge one time and different on the way back. I worked it out when the Canuck buck was at a lower value, it was...

    Sprinter Weight??

My Sprinter doesn't have a lot of options so my load capacity is over 3500lbs. I've had it maxed out a couple of times but only for short runs. For long hauls I prefer to keep it at 2500 and under. 1700lbs in the hills makes the thing get a workout. Definitely the higher weight eats fuel. I...

Newbees you need to read RE: DannyO Brooms Q.

Wow you won't like this answer. Several guys are running those numbers in reverse 60-65% business in the current environment for vans. That's why keeping expenses low is an execise in money management. But usually the 40% would be about right. Your truck payment (if you have one) is a heavy...

    GPS for Laptop?

Don't have those options with mine, so can't give you info. Further depending on version of program the updating delay is different. The 2002 version is 15 seconds and the 2006 is much less (these are the automatic updates the program does as it works). SO you can play with different settings...

    Am I hearing slow?

Ok Barney if it's your fault I'm making less, how about some solutions???(hahaha) Seems the expediting end may be in a bit of a slump especially vans. But at least I'm working to cure that. I'm out canvassing potential customers. Gotta do something to bring it back. Rob Fis

The Cost of Fuel is getting Crazy

Lots of feelings on this topic... First there is as Greg says a lack of refining capacity. A big lack. In my area they have closed 2 refineries. This means trucking or rail for the supplies. The oil sands project has some really needed added investment so it will be a greater supply. But...

Newbees you need to read RE: DannyO Brooms Q.

Definitely making money in a van is tough, especially now that it's pretty slow. Expect to do between 45,000 to 60,000 for the year. If it picks up and companies start shipping small loads again then it can be good. I've had 100000 plus years (yes more than one or two). Last year I made...

    GPS for Laptop?

First thing to understand is that there is a little delay in the update on screen. The program is working in realtime but it does seem to have a few seconds delay at times. Therefore when getting near turns etc, start slowing and looking! Also the program is not perfect with address locations...

Getting into this business? Questions and Answers

RE: Getting into this business? Questions and Ans I'm one of those few that started out with little money and a hefty truck payment. First month I only made $2800. Not enough to pay all the bills. One thing I knew I'd have to do was make myself available 100% for the first year! I made sure...

OK, Time for some real help

Well I worked out my costs (everything) and then figured out if I was to work an 8 hour day I would have to make $25 per hour minimum. Since I do so much deadhead I usually work on the hourly rate for the day. This way I know I'm making money if the run pays minimum $25 per hour for all time...

    Shortest Run

My shortest went from First Cdn Place to #2 First Cdn Place. I parked in the loading docks and dollied the load thru the parking lot underground. Paid $100. Fis

Our Longest Run of ALL TIME

Well 12 hours isn't all that long. I drove from Toronto to Edmonton in 39.5 hours and 20 of it was just going to the Manitoba border with Ontario. That's one Province! I hope your having a good trip as this will work your buggy. Good cluck Rob Fis
