Just bought a 2002 Hino SG

Put antiseize on the threads before you reassemble it. While I prefer the nickel antiseize, copper works pretty well too. Even regular antiseize (which I don't think works all that well in high heat applications) is better than putting that back together with dry threads. But that looks...

Just bought a 2002 Hino SG

Soooo, how's it going? Hino likes using stainless steel hardware on pretty much every single thing on the exhaust. This is generally a good idea, except for one thing: When a stainless bolt and a stainless nut are used together with nothing between them, they will gall. Galling is almost...

Big Truck I work on Hino trucks. I'll answer any questions I know the answers to.

No problem. Since Hino doesn't yet have the popularity of other brands, they can confuse and anger people trying to figure them out on their own. The dealers of multiple brands of trucks are sometimes guilty of not paying enough attention to the brand, and not giving their techs the training...

Big Truck I work on Hino trucks. I'll answer any questions I know the answers to.

Oh, depending on the truck and axles (I don't remember), the front wheels may need to come off of the ground for the king pins to fully accept grease. One type of axle needs the wheels up, and another type needs the wheels on the ground. Id have to look it up. I avoid doing pm's like the...

'07 was the last year before they put DPFs on all of them, so this makes things easier. The regen process tended to dilute the oil with fuel, which is hard on the oil. A castrol semi synthetic is used on trucks 08 and up. You can run pretty much anything you want. Rotella, delo, valvoline...

Just bought a 2002 Hino SG

Last time I checked, an exhaust brake was like $600 or more. Hopefully you can get the stripped bolts out.

Yes, you can drill and tap that, no problem. I'd start with a smaller 1/8 NPT barb fitting. 1/4 is rather large. It's easy to break. I've done it before. Hino also suggests fixing it like this before resorting to radiator replacement.

Roger that. Some other things of note: There are hardly any sensors on the engine, save the coolant temp sensor. There are up to three coolant temp sensors, one for glow plugs/cold start, one for gauge, one for ecu. Get a book, it explains this stuff fairly well. The injection pump is...

Just bought a 2002 Hino SG

The exhaust-mounted valve moves, but the exhaust brake doesn't work? I suppose it could be broken inside, or missing. Sometimes the diaphragms in the actuators fail. If there's an exhaust leak between the brake and the engine, it won't do much except make noise. One word of caution: almost...

Shoot, I don't think I've seen one with a 9 speed, either. Those old Hinos are tough as nails, but there are several things that you'll want to check, and there are other things that are downright quirky. The brakes, for example. Depending on the setup, they may need to be adjusted manually...

The K080539HD is the Gates belt for the 08-10 trucks (according to Rockauto.com). The K080514 is 52 inches in circumference, and the K080539HD is 54.5 inches. It's only available as a Heavy Duty belt, so that sucker is like $50. At some point, there was a change in tensioners or something...

I don't remember which models/years this pertains to, but I've personally done this. Get belt from parts. Too short. Get another belt from parts. Goes on a little too easy, and it squeals sometimes. Get first belt I got from parts (parts guy is pretty fed up at this point) because I...

Piston scuffing is often the result of piston overheat. High coolant temp is often a culprit, but leaking injectors are common too. Fuel in the cylinder at the wrong time will cause massive spikes in cylinder pressure and piston crown overheat. An aluminum piston quickly swells so it fits too...

Fudge. The high blowby plus low compression means a piston scuffed. They're gonna recommend a rebuild. Sent from my DROIDX using EO Forums mobile app

I spend a ridiculous amount of time on the internet. I've been on a youtube bender for about three hours now. Did you know that some old tractors were started with a shotgun shell? That's nuts. I use the same method. Generally I take a 55 gallon drum, throw a board across it, throw an old...
