    Question about winter driving

Landstar uses 45 m.p.h. I don't know what time if any is allocated for loading and unloading. Arriving a bit early for a pick up or delivery is not the mortal sin it was at FedEx Custom Critical. (Exceptioins for certain kinds of loads) Regarding chains, company guidance is to consider...

    Economy???

We can all talk about general economic conditions and share opinions. Closer to home, like in the driver's seat of Diane's and my expediter truck, we see good going ahead now that we are once again with a carrier whose interests are aligned with our own. We are fully engaged in and fully...

    Recorded phone calls

You may know it. I did not until jjorder shared what he knew. I knew calls were recorded but did not know what I said when on hold (which is a lot at FedEx) was recorded too. Had I known when Diane and I were with FedEx, I would have done what JimF51 does and used it to my advantage.

So you have a gun in your truck?

I know of one (see this). There are probably many others. I'm thinking of the smaller carriers whose owners happen to be gun owners too and believe in the right to keep and bear arms. That does not give a driver or owner-operator a free pass, as JimmyB explains is his great post on this subject.

Married Couple Looking to get into the Expedite Business.

Quote from a trucker upon his arrest (true story): "I should have known she was a cop when I saw she had all of her teeth."

Married Couple Looking to get into the Expedite Business.

It's not a silly suggestion but not realistic either. LizSmiles said in her original post that they have yet to get their CDLs. Sitting at a truck stop in a FedEx package truck is nothing like sitting in an expediter van or straight truck. Expediter trucks of any kind serve as our home away from...

What Carrier Really Cares about it O/O?

Yes, Diane and I would work for a carrier that did not care for us. We did so for eight years, knowing full well that we were never more than a number to them. But for most of that time, they played fair and we made good money. It did not matter that they did not care for us. It mattered only...

What Carrier Really Cares about it O/O?

As others have said, "cares about" is a broad category subject to broad interpretations. Nevertheless, it seemed to make sense to vote for Diane's and my present carrier of choice. In doing so, I am using "cares for" to mean respect, as in looking on us as business people and treating us...

Married Couple Looking to get into the Expedite Business.

Some of the most in-love couples you will ever see are crisscrossing the country in trucks.

My Truck is My Man Cave

Not in this truck. Security inspections and truck tour requests are frequent enough to prompt ongoing good housekeeping habits. Even without that incentive, the large sleeper provides plenty of space to store dirty laundry and keep the truck interior pleasant.

My Truck is My Man Cave

Man cave is not so much a place as it is the experience of being alone and undisturbed as you lose yourself in a project or activity. Diane was in the truck when the original post came to mind. I was outside, changing filters and replacing tail lights.

    Truck Stop Football

It's third and long on the parking lot line by the dumpster. Here's the snap! The quarterback hides the ball in a lineman's butt crack.... he walks it in for a touchdown past a befuddled defense who knows not who to tackle!

    Truck Stop Football

Excerpt from my blog today: Drivers in a truck stop TV lounge generally chat about the game and cheer the exciting plays, but you have to be careful about what you say. Most if not all of the people in the room drive for a living. Until the game is well underway and people have tipped their...

My truck is my man cave. And because it's on wheels, I get to take it with me wherever I go. :)

    Flat Rate vs. Percentage Pay

You are correct. The tables above show revenue paid to the trucks, and it is assumed that the trucks are team driven by same-household owner-operators. If you want to turn the trucks into fleet-owner trucks and put a team in each truck that is not same-household (two people, each of whom has...

Which carrier would you lease on with??

Give me the numbers and I'll plug them into the table and show the results. For each truck, I will need: - Pay per mile - Monthly paid miles - Monthly unpaid miles But notice -- and this is important -- you are changing the subject. The Flat Rate vs. Percentage Pay thread began by comparing...

Which carrier would you lease on with??

Kindly note that I said from the beginning that the table is over-simplified. In your comments you bump up against the table limits yourself when you talk about extra pay for pallet jack, etc. How do you account for those and other accessorials? In this simplified table, you don't. There is no...

    Flat Rate vs. Percentage Pay

I should have mentioned this in the original post. The monthly figures presume that the trucks are in service most if not all of the month. While that often happens, it never happens for 12 months in a row. In the first tables, out of service time is not accounted for in the one-year and...

    Flat Rate vs. Percentage Pay

Responses to various comments: 1. The distinction between WG and surface is not relevant here. This is a comparison of flat rate to percentage, regardless of the division within FedEx and regardless of carrier. Hypothetical Truck A runs on a flat rate. Hypothetical Truck B runs on a percentage...
