    Expenses and Homeless

Broompilot, As stated on my web site (see truck specs link below), our truck cost $251,000 to build. That does not include the cost of our freight handling equipment. It also does not include finance costs and insurance, both of which will be higher than trucks that cost less. For the record...

    Insurance and Expenses

Just one more thought, about the business and not forum members. For years, people have talked here about being prepared for the bad times. If something like an insurance rate hike rattles you now, fasten your seat belts and grab your prayer book. We all may be in for a real rough ride. While...

    Insurance and Expenses

Broom, Being popular on an internet open forum may be a worthy goal, but it will do nothing to make you a more successful expediter. If I wanted to be popular, I would stay home, run for public office (so the media would put my picture in the paper and quote me throughout the state, and people...

    Papers at a scale

This is good information, especially for newbies. I especially like the tip about keeping your hazmat chart in full view. Had not thought of that one before. Instead of a three-ring binder, we use a file organizer that zips shut, with the documents kept in document protectors inside. Pages are...

    Insurance and Expenses

    >"You aren't being realistic" huh? What the heck do they >think we're out here for? I don't think they care what we are out here for. The reasons people are out here are as varied as the drivers themselves. >Our amusement? Speaking for ourselves, Diane and I absolutely are out here for...

    >You're not getting what I'm saying, Louixo. I'm not blaming >anyone here. But the companies and dispatchers have this >"here's something that's better than nothing" attitude. I don't get that from our dispatchers at FedEx. Perhaps that is because we do not accept low-paying loads, and when...

fedex o/o want to be paid as employees

Continuing in the food for thought mode, I read (skimmed) the California Court of Appeal decison filed 8/13/07. Of greatest interest to me was one of the Court's findings: "[FedEx Ground] Drivers work full time and exclusively for FedEx, and must work every day FedEx provides service unless...

fedex o/o want to be paid as employees

article. "Unions have lost 44 out of 46 votes by FedEx drivers over the years, and in the two cases where they won, the locals were unable to negotiate contracts,...." I remain convinced that while these cases have the potential to really shake things up, the liklihood that they will is very...

fedex o/o want to be paid as employees

Yes, it could really shake things up, but where actions like this have been brought before, it has not. Various courts have made rulings on this in local cases in years past. I'm not sure how the cases played out in the long run but it is clear that they have not shaken things up much, if at all.

    Route & Restricted Bridges

Like Rich said, dispatch is the one to call. That is plan A. Plan B could be to check HAZMAT routing with CoPilot Truck mapping software, but that information is general in nature. As you know, some types of HAZMAT are permitted on bridges or in tunnels where others are prohibited. CoPilot Truck...

Tennesseahawk, A while ago, you mentioned a blown engine in one of your posts. Perhaps I got it all wrong, but your post came across as humor instead of something more serious. When I read it, I did not believe your engine blew. I thought you were kidding. Now, you are talking about a new...

If you own a Rand McNally Motor Carriers' Road Atlas, use it to identify truck routes in the area. If you do not own one, buy one. They are on sale cheap at truck stops now as next year's version is not far off. If you specify your pickup and delivery locations (or close so you do not reveal...

    box to frame

I once asked the same question of a truck body manufacturer's president of sales and the company's regional sales manager. They did not have a spec upon which they relied. Not liking their answer and remaining curious, I started looking under every straight truck I saw. The number of U-bolts...
