Gag orders are supposed to be applied to just the prosecution to ensure a private citizens/ defendants right to a fair trial under the 6th Amendment to the Constitution. Not supposed to be applied to a defendant who enjoys the presumption of innocence.

In a highly partisan political area the likelihood of a fair trial is very remote. If the venue were changed there would likely be a Dem holdout hung jury or an outright aquittal.
