    Road Searches: No good answer

I know I risk opening a can of worms I'd rather not open here, but if I were a government official really intent on finding/preventing vehicular terrorism I'd have to look awfully hard at the standard white cargo van. They're ubiquitous, absolutely nobody pays serious attention to them, so you...

    Police Harrassment

I would think that after ninety minutes of having his vehicle turned inside out and the officers found nothing, it might have been a wee bit premature to call the guy a "bad guy" anyway. Around my neck of the woods, you're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, and the story as written...

    Let's Talk About Tolls

I-Pass rates increase too-- for cars. If the present toll at the gate is .40 I-Pass, .80 Cash, the new rate will be .75/1.50 for an example. I think only the car rates are changing, from what I see on the signs. The Skyway is changing too, if I remember right. If it does, it will be cheaper...

    Fuel economy and Cold Air

Back in the days when I had the Sprinter, I used anti-gel throughout the winter. 15% Bio-diesel is all that you can get around here, and I've had the time or two of having to call a tow truck because it wouldn't start. Problem: The owner's manual said not to use bio-diesel mixes, but as I...

I pass / EZ pass account holders

Thanks for the heads-up. I checked, and so far nothing out of the ordinary. On the I-Pass website they have a note saying they're aware of the problem and are notifying banks, credit agencies and users as well as fixing the software glitch.

Weight on a 3/4 ton van

It's just possible you can push a heavy 3/4 ton van to a 3,000 lbs payload, personally I wouldn't do more than that "even if". I'm paid by the mile, not by weight. It's just not worth tearing up my equipment when I can make as much-- or more maybe, by delivering a 25 lb box as I would for doing...

    Fuel economy and Cold Air

Winter hits those of us in vans, too-- and for much the same reasons. I keep my fuel mileage, and I see the decrease every winter just in running. Now, some of us throw in another fuel-bandit and that is the need to run the engine, at least occasionally, while at a rest stop. That's burning fuel...

Weight on a 3/4 ton van

I'll second the cat scale recommendation. When I had the 2500 Sprinter, I found that 3,000 lbs was about the limit, further I found that the best place for the weight was on the rear axle. The front axle was already close to legal limits, but the rear axle would take the full 3,000 payload with...

    Scaling

Not much of a need for an apology, Moot. They sold these vehicles with a few different weight ratings, as I remember back when I was driving Fords. You could get either a light 2500 (which probably has the 7300 rating) or the heavy 2500 which would have the 8550 rating. I got the heavy one. When...

Icy roads lead to fatal accident in near Floyd

I'm not sure a seatbelt would have helped in this case or not. The van rolled several times--- that's a titanic amount of energy being unleashed, and I could bet on the roof being crushed in too. The belt would have kept her in the vehicle though, and that might have made a difference.

    Scaling

Just so's you know: The GVWR of my 2500 is 8550 lbs. At least, that's according to the lie on the door-jam sticker. For 500 lbs I'm not going to quibble and I'll load to the license, since it's lower and in this situation is the one that would get me into trouble first. Legally, you're...

    Scaling

In Ohio. The problem is that each state plays by their own rules, and that's what makes this business so much fun. Here in Illinois, if you're under 16,000 lbs GVW you don't have to scale. One state at least has their minimum set at 26,000 GVW. Ohio is at 10,000, which would make me have...

    Scaling

Doing a bit of research on the subject. Arizona seems to be the tightest with a posted minimum weight, any commercial vehicle over 1,000 lb has to scale (so far, messenger bikers don't need to scale anywhere--- how long does that last, I wonder). Wyoming may be the toughest, expect to have to...

How Many Companys are You Contracted To?

Two, both out-and-back outfits based in the Chicago area. I run out loaded, deadhead back.

    Scaling

I live in Illinois, and here the requirement is that vehicles weighing 16,000 or more must weigh. By the time I get my G2500 that heavy, the scales would be the least of my troubles. There is no standardization between the states on this. I've seen it as low as 6,000, some states say "All...

heater & ac blower not working

Sprinters have a cabin air filter. It should be located just under the windshield wipers. The fact that you're getting airflow tells me that it's more likely the motor though-- you get forced airflow while driving, but nothing while sitting at a stop light.... it'll be the blower motor.

    Scaling

I just got back from a trip, never pulled across a single scale and never stopped. WV, VA, NC, TN and KY all seem to want all trucks and commercial vehicles to scale, but I never see any vans on the scales. It's always the obviously over 10,000 vehicles scaling. I have a question. What do I...

Black Friday - Time to stop the maddness

If you think you have to push, shove, trample and pepper-spray people in order to get whatever you want for Christmas, then you really need to re-think this. Supposedly, we're celebrating the birth of the Lord our Savior. If by any chance you've read even part of the Gospels, can you possibly...

Black Friday - Time to stop the maddness

When did buying things you can't afford for people you don't like with money you don't have become "The Christmas Spirit", and when did the refusal to behave this way start making us "Scrooges"??? Somebody mentions that Jesus wasn't born on December 25 anyway, but it doesn't matter because our...

Black Friday - Time to stop the maddness

There's plenty of blame to go around, no use hogging it. Businesses and customers are both at fault, and greed is at the bottom of the whole mess. I won't go near the big malls on Thanksgiving week unless I have no other choice-- and shopping doesn't rate as "no other choice". Whatever it is...
