    Some days.....

Some days I wonder. Professional drivers have to be careful, safety violations can really wreck your day. The link below shows an amateur who wasn't careful enough by any means. Absolutely the wrong way to do this, in my never-to-be-humble opinion. Note: I'm posting this here because it's my...

    U ship

Just judging by what I saw on the website: Barely worth it even if you do snag a run heading home. The rates tend to get bid below the price of fuel for the run, I have a hard time imagining staying in business like that.

    "LATE" delivery?

It's not just the East Coast. I live in Chicago, and even on a short run-- say, from Evanston to South Holland, Illinois-- Friday afternoon rushhour is no picnic. You couldn't guarantee two-hour service on that run if you had an Indy car, much less a heavy straight rig.

The Future (End) of Truck Driving is Closer Than You Think

I have a bad habit of asking a question which, to my knowledge, no one has adequately answered yet. That question is this: After we have all been replaced on the job by robots, who is going to buy the products the robots make and deliver??? Laid-off workers who can't get new jobs because...

    Mattresses

I never leave home without a reclining seat and a neck pillow. I have an air mattress as well, but when you're loaded there's no place for the air mattress. That reclining seat has probably saved my life more times than I can count.

Multiple Carrier Cargo Van, Sprinter, Box Truck Drivers

I was running for two carriers but gave that up, now I'm running for the carrier I started with. Running for two actually created problems, not least of which was the concern that carrier #2 seemed not to have proper--or any-- authorities. It occurred to me that getting pulled over while running...

    GVW help

Every vehicle I've ever driven seems to have that. The steer axle gives one rate, the drive axle give a higher weight, and the two combined give a significantly higher weight rating than the GVWR on the sticker. I weighed my Sprinter once, almost empty (I had 85 pounds of freight on that day)...

    GPS and radio interference.

Weird if it's outside, and it can be controlled by turning on or off the radio. I had a suspicion that TomTom just doesn't like Christian music, but that idea doesn't really work either. Present theory: When the GPS is sitting on the doghouse, it's lower than line-of-sight to the sky. It...

    GPS and radio interference.

I've recently had a bout of interference issues with my GPS unit, a TomTom. I found that if I place it on top of the doghouse, the FM radio will mess it up royally. No doubt about it. I listen to 94.3 regularly here in the Chicago area, and that causes the GPS to lose the signal and/or to drift...

    I ask twice!

This makes me glad I don't have qc. As it is, I have a cell phone. A discrepancy like that is an automatic call-in, just standard CYA procedure. I wouldn't have rolled from the pick-up until I had the dispatcher tell me to go with it, then at least I would have the name of the person authorizing...

Homicidal fake cop in Mississippi. Be careful!

I think it's because the one possible witness saw a gold Crown Vic. Also, I doubt a guy playing at "cop" would use a Ford Econoline to do his job in. It doesn't "look like" a police car, but the Crown Vic does.

What does your screen name mean?

My initials plus a hobby interest. Sport 40s are radio-controlled model hydros. They look a lot like the full size unlimited boats you sometimes see.

    Wow....

I'm under 10,000, so of course I don't log, but--- if I have a broken dipstick, I sure need to get that fixed pronto. By the time the idiot light comes on the damage is done, and it can be prevented. Draining and replacing the oil should, in my never-to-be-humble opinion, be done as a matter...

    Companies that fine drivers

I drove for a carrier (a courier company here in Chicago) that amended the contract several times and didn't tell me a thing about it. By the time I finally left, the contract I was working under bore little resemblance to the one I signed. Rates and commission were all over the map, and it's...

    5280...

I could do with some folk that understand that deadhead miles aren't exactly give-away either. Dash and back is probably about as cheap as you get, a lot of guys think 1.15 a mile is a lot for a van. So it is, if you're not coming back the way you came. Now it's just break even on the vehicle...

    Shipping wars

I just did a quick check a few minutes ago, nothing in depth on my checking, just seeing what turns up. Mostly large items like cars, a bus, somebody appears to be shipping a truck-- all things I can't handle in my van even assuming I were parked in their lot waiting for the next load. Some...

    fuel surcharge for sprinters

It depends. I drive for two different companies, both have a base of .90 per mile for all vans. The FSC for one company is .17 per mile, the other is .25 per mile.

How secure is your car, van, or truck?

I think if I want to take up car theft as an occupation, Russia is the place to be.

    Question about Sprinters???

My big beef with the Sprinter was repair. When it breaks (it's a machine, sooner or later it's going to break) it's a Mercedes and you won't soon forget it. It takes a while to get parts from Germany, there's only a handful of mechanics that will touch it and so on. Lights: I had to replace...

    Question about Sprinters???

FWIW: When I had my 2500 Sprinter, I ran it across the scales with a 3/4 full tank and me in the drivers seat. I came away with the idea that 3,000 was my limit in that van. Of course, I didn't have all the stuff some of you want to load up on, it was pretty basic. I wouldn't recommend stressing...
