    Dot regulations

I wonder at being able to drop and pick up a travel-trailer in only ten minutes. It usually takes a little longer than that. Oh, don't forget to throw in: When you do the light check, for some reason the left turn signal on the trailer doesn't work so you have to trouble-shoot that. If you're...

    Options for "small scale" expediting

I wouldn't do it. It drinks fuel like a locomotive and won't haul as much freight as a cargo van would. A long pick-up bed is 8 feet long, the camper shell typically only gives you about three feet from floor to ceiling. A standard-length CV gives ten feet from the seats to the back doors, the...

    Dot regulations

OK. My van has a GVWR of 8600 lbs. It doesn't take much of a trailer to push it up over 10,000 combined GVWR. Now, at that point you do have to deal with DOT logging, HOS and so on. Even before then though the issues of the time it takes to drop the trailer and re-connect it when you have a job...

    Dot regulations

Hmmm... Somehow I'm not surprised. When I look at your avatar, I think either a tractor/trailer or else one very huge straight truck, and without knowing more I'm favoring the idea of the tractor/trailer. Vanning works a bit different. It's relatively easy to pull up to a shipper, back your...

CV and a tear drop camper

I have magnetic signs. That makes it simple. When I'm on business, the signs are on. When I'm running personal stuff, the signs are stowed. That makes it a lot simpler.

    Dot regulations

Too many people watch "shipping wars" and think you can really do that. The idea of an RV pulling a cargo trailer "for hire" and getting away with it is something I'd expect to see on "Shipping Wars". I have seen a CV pulling such a trailer, BUT--- it wasn't commercial. He used the trailer to...

    Dot regulations

I can easily imagine another problem, and it has to do with licensing the towing vehicle as an RV. That's no problem as long as you're not doing commercial work. License your van as an RV, load up the boat and have a good time. No problem. The problem comes in the instant you do for-hire work...

    Dot regulations

It's been mentioned that dropping and re-connecting to a travel trailer doesn't take as long/isn't as complicated as a 53 foot trailer is. I've done both, and--- back in the day when I drove semi, I never had to disconnect the trailer before backing into a dock. That only happened in certain...

    Pulling a really small camper

When I was doing courier work, I asked dispatch there about pulling a trailer. At the time, I had a Ford E-150 and the trailer would have given room for more freight. They said no. They really wanted at least a box truck, I eventually bought the Sprinter as a halfway-point. I couldn't park the...

    Staying warm this winter?

I'm going to be putting in some insulation. This van only has steel walls back of the driver, no insulation at all. It occurs to me that as it is, I'd have to light a bonfire back there to get meaningful heat on a cold day, but if it's got some insulation it won't be so bad.

    C/Vans and Ethanol/Good article

Small gas engines don't like ethanol. The rubber parts just don't hold up. Funny thing about it, though, we've been running E10 fuel here for a couple of decades now and in many areas E10 is all you can get as far as gasoline is concerned. So, I wonder how come the engine manufacturers don't...

Multi-Carrier, Freight volume, and selling advertisements on your truck/van

I ran for two companies for about six months. It wasn't worth the bother, I'm still with the company I leased on with at first. The second outfit I have serious questions about, seems I never was able to get information out of them so I could get signs made. No MC numbers, no DOT numbers...

    Staying warm this winter?

I thought it might be something like that. I can trade off a thing or two. The shotgun seat can go, that shaves a bit of weight. I probably don't need to make as big a production of it as many of you do, since I run hot-shot and I don't spend all that much time trying to live in the van. Still...

    Staying warm this winter?

I have to ask: What about weight? It occurs to me that house batteries and such carry a weight penalty. It may mean a little less in a 3500 series van, you've got some ability to give up a little. In a 2500 series van, though, it may mean a good deal. I had mine on the scale a couple of weeks...

    GM CV owners

That would explain surging, but it wouldn't explain why wvcourier is using more fuel than he thinks he should be. I will agree the gasoline we're using these days is the pits, especially in the small engines you mention. Most of those small powerplants require a carburetor rebuild every other...

    GM CV owners

I was trying to figure out how a bad fuel pump/filter would cause a vehicle to burn more gas. I'm stumped on that one. A plugging filter will cause surging, and a bad fuel pump will fail completely to deliver gas, but neither of these will cause your van to burn more fuel than it ordinarily...

    GM CV owners

I've got 100,000 on my last set. Looking at that photo makes me think it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a look-see. It runs all right at the moment but Winter is coming and a spark plug that looks like those won't help cold starts. Last year, in August, I had to have everything changed. The...

    GPS flashing green arrows

Quick update: I had a go at trying to fix this in Tom Tom Home. No good, what I want to do--- turn off "Advanced Lane Guidance"-- is not possible on the Tom Tom XL 350. That's a real shame, since it's hard for me to think of a less helpful feature. Now that I know what it's called though, I know...
