    Wet weather blues

It rained yesterday, also today it's raining. I went out to start my van this morning and it wouldn't fire. Or it did, ran like garbage for a few seconds and then shut down. After getting the doghouse off, my landlord brought out his heater and we aimed that at the distributor and the coil...

    Quick question...Anyone? Anyone?

In the UK it does. The bonnet* covers the engine compartment. The boot is where you store your spare tyre, tools and the occasional defunct mobster. *"Bonnet= "hood", and "boot"="trunk".

    Quick question...Anyone? Anyone?

I heard the term from hot-rodding,when people had to put larger-than-stock covers over their larger than stock tires. Cutting out the old wheel wells and then welding wash-tubs in their place got the job done. Since then, I've heard the term "tubs" used to refer to the standard wells our vans...

    Quick question...Anyone? Anyone?

All Ford E-series vans have tubs. But, unless you have the dually wheels (hmmm, I've never seen an Econoline with duallies) they have the standard tubs. You can get a pallet between them, it's 52" between the wheel tubs. For some reason, the 3500 series Sprinters seem to come with the dually...

    Quick question...Anyone? Anyone?

Quickie question: Most of us, when we say "Sprinter" we mean the 2500 series. Because of the rear-wheel tubs sticking out as far as they do in the 3500 series, you can't get a pallet in unless you've built a platform, which reduces the capacity. But, just for giggles, what is the payload weight...

I'll have to look into that.

    Quick question...Anyone? Anyone?

I hope Ford backs them better, anyway. One problem with the Sprinter was/is getting anybody-- including dealerships-- to look at it when it needs repairs. Whether it had a Dodge, Freightliner or Mercedes nameplate, it doesn't take long to figure out that only certain of those dealers will even...

    Quick question...Anyone? Anyone?

For our purposes, and having driven both a Sprinter and standard cargo vans, a Sprinter is a really large and sometimes incredibly expensive cargo van. A Sprinter can be had with a 14 foot long cargo section, and with the Super High Top you can easily stand up in it. The standard cargo van--...

ALL STATE Express worst company ever

Expediting--- emergency freight delivery--- hmmmm, there should be an indicator in the names. We work on a fireman's schedule. Wait until the bell rings, then go like crazy. A fireman may wait days until the bell rings. Read other posts around here and you find it's not at all uncommon to...

    Gas pump shuts off...

I'd still check the vent. When you fill the tank, displaced air has to go somewhere and a partially plugged vent wont let the air out fast enough.

ALL STATE Express worst company ever

I was thinking the same thing. I read these boards, and I see experienced drivers with great companies sometimes do a lot of sitting. There are days when there just isn't any freight, and of course those of us in the vans sit the most.

Why do you not use TA/Petro as your primary truck stop?

I stopped at the Petro in Effingham, Illinois last night. Just a fuel stop, thought about eating but the fact is that I wasn't all that hungry so I bought a couple of sandwiches and let it go at that. I've been meaning to try the Iron Skillet, but last night wasn't the night. One big reason...

OK. If you own the truck, you get the expenses. If you're driving for the truck owner, the owner of the truck (usually) gets the expenses--- unless you and the owner came to some other agreement, in which case that's in your contract with the owner. The only time I would expect the Carrier to...

    Solo Straight Truck Drivers

Maybe it's just me. It seems to me somebody didn't do the homework before starting for the pickup to begin with. With or without the confirmation sheet, I want to know (a) where and when I'm picking up, (b) where and when it's to be delivered and if dispatch knows, how many miles. Not to...

    Solo Straight Truck Drivers

Does the time zone figure in here? Noon pickup Eastern, 4:20 the next morning Central. I still see problems, not least of which is the fact that a straight doesn't have the acceleration of a CV, or the top speed as like as not, and further often is restricted to a slower speed legally to...

The transporter is still a couple of centuries in the future. Even then, a transporter accident can occur and cause problems. The only other way I know of to give an ironclad, no ifs, and or buts guarantee of on-time delivery is to be God. I am not God, and I'm reasonably sure you're not God...

I begin to think that y'all are millionaires and you're just doing this for (a) a hobby or (b) because your wife told you to go outside and find something to do. My obligation is to keep my vehicle maintained and myself in condition so that I can complete the mission safely and on time...

    Solo Straight Truck Drivers

You have a point. Generally, the number of miles involved will give you a heads-up. Figure 50 miles an hour, one side or the other, and it's not too hard.

The "Code of Silence" is one reason why it's safer in Afghanistan right now than it is in some Chicago neighborhoods. A shooting takes place, people know who did it but nobody will talk. So, crimes go unsolved and the body count goes up. Further, I've seen situations where speaking up actually...

Don't forget a dock-plate. You need something to bridge the gap between the trucks, and a plate will do that.
