    Turtle Top van

I hadn't looked at the photos until just now. No, no, no, no, no. This van is so badly handicapped it's not funny. It has it's place in the construction industry, maybe, but in expediting--- it barely has load space for one skid. Two if they're small and you slide them in sideways. Buy a...

    Turtle Top van

It seems 10,000 is the break point. Below that, CVs and Sprinters rule the day, box vans seem bigger but they're handicapped when it comes to payload weight (that box weighs enough). Above 10,000, you might as well go with a dock-high truck and be done with it. That's in expediting. The van...

    Opinions on self defense

Is that a bad thing? The topic is whether you'd shoot if a beggar gets too pushy.

    Opinions on self defense

Real quick thought on your problem: I've had that happen with Fords, so it's not just a Sprinter problem. Good power from the battery until you try to start--- then, totally dead. No lights, no nothing. Look for corroded battery cable connections. The corrosion will be where the lead cable-clamp...

    Gps

I just changed from a Tom Tom to a Garmin unit. The Garmin is so much better than the Tom Tom that it's not funny. I haven't seen enough of the Rand McNally units to know much about them.

    Opinions on self defense

True. However, it's also apparent that the OP was working himself into a panic from jump, and I doubt it would have taken a broken window or a forced door to begin the shooting. Frankly, stuff like this makes me scared to get a gun because it looks to me like having a gun makes you shut down...

    Opinions on self defense

So far, I haven't seen the guy with the gas can do anything except beg for money. That is NOT a shooting offense in any state in the union. Not even in Texas, where sometimes it seems killing a guy because "he needed killing" could be justifiable. I have seen a guy with a gun go into a panic...

    Opinions on self defense

I have to wonder if having a gun gives you a false sense of security. It seems to me to be that way as often as not. You're depending on your gun way too much. Now, in the example given in the OP, I saw nothing there beyond waving a gas can that could be considered threatening on a lethal...

Lady requests city erect memorial to those who died in a crash.....

Earlier this year, a truck overturned and some cattle dropped from the bridge onto the roadway below. This happened where Interstate 80 breaks from 294 and goes West. The PETA people wanted a memorial for the cattle that died. They, too, were on the way to market where they were to meet the...

    GM CV owners

Bill, I'm not sure of the year your van was built but 14 mpg to maybe 17 mpg seems to be what you get. I get about 14.5 to maybe 15 if it's feeling good on my '98. In winter it seems I get a bit less, colder air takes more energy to make power I guess.

    Cargo Van Owners opinion

If three local shops said it was more than just the pump, then I would guess the engine is pretty well fried. Still, if the rest of the van is sound I would replace the engine/tranny in half a heartbeat. In our business, the resale issue is a non-starter anyway, the question is do you think you...

My first winter out on road

I have the Big Buddy. A look through the instructions reveals it does have a fuel appetite and this has to be considered. Like anything else, don't use more than you have to. The low setting will probably do down to twenty or so if you're well insulated, below that the mid-point setting (one...

I second that. Is the rest of the engine healthy? If it is, a new oil pump may be all that's needed.

Romney held in disdain in his home state

I'd be more concerned if Massachusetts was giving Romney a ticker-tape parade. They're one of the most liberal states in the union, only California is even remotely comparable. Romney flip-flops. He's a politician, what else is new? There might be a handful of politicians that say what they...

    Cargo Van Owners opinion

Is the rest of the van reasonably sound? If it is, go ahead and spend the money on this one. If there's electrical problems, rust and a bunch of problems coming up, replace the van. Thanks for the price-check, by the way. It gives me an idea of what I could be facing when major components go...

My first winter out on road

If you can afford the initial installation expense, the Espar heaters are definitely the way to go. They pull their fuel from your main fuel tank, but-- your engine burns gallons to keep you warm, the Espar burns ounces--- so, probably on my next van I'll do that. Not this one, the Gray Lady is...

    GPS flashing green arrows

OK, maybe this is the last on this thread. Maybe not. But--- I started with those idiotic flashing green arrows that the Tom Tom unit seems to be cursed with. Today, I had the Garmin unit on it's first real run, and even though I know this particular run so well I could do it blindfolded it...

My first winter out on road

Last year, I cycled my engine on and off. That didn't work as well as one would hope, especially since there was no insulation in the van at all. This year, I've insulated the van and I'm going to try a Buddy heater, amongst other things. Staying South isn't terribly reliable, it does...

An open question to owners of unmarked van companies.

By a very strange coincidence department: One of our fellows suggests bad guys don't use Toyota Camrys for their mis-deeds. Now, in the thread on the shootings in Michigan, one of the links says that police are looking for-- oh, I know you won't believe this-- a dark brown 1998 Toyota Camry. How...

An open question to owners of unmarked van companies.

Not necessarily true. Bad guys drive all sorts of vehicles. Ted Bundy had a VW bug, if I remember right, with the rear seat removed. If I were to decide to become a bad guy I might very well choose a Toyota Camry, the reason being that the car will disappear in a sea of similar vehicles.
