A good question. Many companies have rules that prohibit the practice just for the peace of mind it gives their contractors. I can't come up with anything that would point to it being a "good" practice. Why have even a hint of impropriety? Has it cost them potential contractors signing on...
I've read good reviews on it. This is the first I've heard of a problem. FWIW, the first thing I do with a new GPS is hook it up to the Garmin website and get any updates and patches available.
