July 4th slowdown and the shutdowns

Linda and I were sitting in Memphis after dropping on the 2nd. Debating whether or not to deadhead home 800 miles for the 4th. Yep, we said lets go. We got 50 miles out of Memphis and dispatch calls and says we know you are out of service but we have a load going to F Wayne, would you like...

How To Calculate Maintenace Costs For Class 8 Trucks

All expenses end up in the equation figuring out what the customer pays. Just because you dont tell him he is paying for parts or a warehouse or your healthcare, in the end he does, or you dont get to have any of those things.

    this too shall pass

That is exactly what I am referring to. Even though you probably didnt feel the impact of gas prices quadrupling , freeways speed being set nationally at 55, gas stations running out of gas, rationing of fuel, the 70's since 1948 were the highest years of inflation, still you made money...

    Internet access on road

After reading this forum yesterday morning, the Wife and I were walking in a Mall north of Charleston and as she darted off into the book store, I saw the Verizon kiosk. Stopped to ask questions, liked the answers and walked away with a usb air card. The cost, $0 for the air card...

    this too shall pass

Those of us over the age of 50 probably remember the tough economic times of the 70's. High unemployment, double digit inflation, oil prices going thru the roof, fuel prices soaring, Arab nations flexing their muscle by dropping oil production, wage freezes, gold and silver prices soaring...

    Reefer Relocation Charge

Hi Dave, I wish I could say I average $2.45/mile...... cant. My average is over $2.00, but not to higher loaded miles but to higher FSC. My net is running about the same, some months a couple points lower some a couple points higher. 12 months ago I thought $1.85 to $2.00 was a good...

    Reefer Relocation Charge

As far as the FSC for dry box vs reefer, I am always surprised every month when I figure out net fuel cost by adjusting the total fuel purchased less FSC. Month after month , $1.20 to $1.25 is my adjusted cost for fuel after FSC. Not bad, eh for a DR unit. But I got to tell you my D...

    Installed?

I would expect tax to be additional. There are some who are tax-exempt and the tax shouldnt be applied as part of promo price. Also, taxes vary by county and residency depending on the item purchased. As far as any other costs, one would hope not. Sometimes though, having a service or...

Lessons in Leadership From the Ultimate Leader

Trying to convey earthly values that we know and live by in explanations of religion, often leave me wanting more. Our ability to understand why Jesus did the things he did often means different things to different people depending on their walk and need. Jesus believed in order. Both in...

    Great Places To Eat!!!

A new place for us is the "Machine Shed" in Urbandale IA, on the other side of 35 from the "J". It is by the Clairion. We walked to it, a little over 1/2 mile. No sidewalks. Similar inside to a Cracker Barrel with , I believe, a superior menu. An old fav of ours, SLYMANS. THE corn beef...

    parenting then and now

We raised our daughter with the notion of trust. We trusted our opinion on how she should be raised. She had chores and responsibilities ( both at home and school ) that if met awarded her liberties. As her liberties were earned by her actions, she was made aware, they could be lost by her...

    Honest Opinion Please

I posted earlier that Linda and I got into expediting about the same age you two are. To be exact, I was 55 and Linda was 47. As far as being better off school bus driving, if you call not being able to make enough to ever retire, then go back. This is a tough business requiring tough...
