    Best ST box size??

Thanks jjoerger for your response post. That's the kind of Data that I'm looking for!! I won't argue that 16' reefer may be a "specialty load hauler". I was just using that as an example. Data is the kind of stuff that business decisions are built on, and yours is very helpful. What's...

    Best ST box size??

Lots of "interesting" comments, and I thank you for all of them! Now what I really need is DATA. Of you (men and women) that are running 20'and 22' boxes, what percentage of your runs are with the box "full"? One run in 200- .05%, one in 100 - 1% or one in 10 - 10%? I see that Phil and Diane...

    Best ST box size??

I agree with the "shopping" idea. That is the phase I am currently in. Trying to collect all of the data, analyze it, see what fits MY needs, and how it fits the business plan and MY long term plans. I started out reading "your piece" about specifying your truck, and have moved on to you blog...

    Best ST box size??

I'm not sure about the "kicking it up a notch", I'm just looking at all of the options that make sense. CV has advantages of low cost of entry, and lower operating costs, (fuel, insurance, tires) but it looks like C or D units have more flexibility on loads and able to stay rolling more. May be...

    Tired

I too am tired....I'm 55 worked every single day of my life, and now am told that with my 4 year college education and 20+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, I really don't fit into the "company environment".

    Best ST box size??

OK...40' rule I understand............but how often are you hauling "10 skids or long OD loads"? Seems like the posts I read are 6 or less skids, down to one box of 250lbs. Also what makes most sense...single or dual axle? I understand the additional operating costs of dual axle, but is is...

    Best ST box size??

What is the best box size when looking at a ST?? I see several used with 20'-22' boxes. This tells me one of two things.....either these are the ones that no one wants, or this is what everyone uses. What size box are most people running ST using? Why?? What would the benefit or...

Van - better more volume or more weight capacity?

OK...Great reason to stay UNDER 10,001!!! I suspect thing can be difficult without adding diificulty of stopping and scaling or keeping logs (though I do know how-just don't want to). So...I think the 3/4 T extended van is going to be the winner here, unless some one comes up with some really...

Does this apply to vans also??

Van - better more volume or more weight capacity?

Thanks again for all of the insight from you guys who are DOING IT!! Both arguments make lots of sense. I'll send Transporter a private message if I can figure out how, and see what his take is. It's Sping in Upstate NY and had to go out and mow the lawn for the first time. Poor old B and S...

Van - better more volume or more weight capacity?

Thanks to everyone for their wisdom!! All very good advise and information!! It will help me in the decision process. Geo.....you mention staying under 10K GVW. I understand the wisdom of staying under 26K GVW, but don't understand the 10K. Can you explain?? My thoughts are.....cube...

Van - better more volume or more weight capacity?

Cheri, thanks for the post. And I agree with you about the stresses. what the real question was will the cube van get better chances to run more trips becuase it has more volume, and is more flexible in what it can take??

Van - better more volume or more weight capacity?

Thanks LDB for the post. My thoughts are the weight differences aren't really that much, and the more flexible the vehicle, the more runs it can get. Fuel mileage will be sacrificed, but that only comes into play when you AREN'T SITTING.

Van - better more volume or more weight capacity?

In the continuing saga of my adventure, I'm wondering if it is better to have more weight capacity or more volume capacity? Which gets used most often? Yes I know...with a Sprinter I could have both, but a Sprinter just doesn't fit into the start-up budget. I have opportunity for E350...

    Working the numbers and confused

Well....I said I was was willing to listen, so I guess I heard. No matter which way I do it, I'm going to learn what the real miles are, where to go and not to go, and which carriers are the right ones to work for and fit the way I work.No matter what, those are just the hard lessons that I...

    Working the numbers and confused

Ok...As a newbie, I'm ready and willing to listen to someone smarter and more experienced than myself. What is the significant "up side" of driving for someone else?? Aren't all of the same factors in play except for worrying about truck expense?? What I mean is, does it change the amount of...

    Working the numbers and confused

LDB....or anyone else...you mentioned operating costs. I'm reasonably talented and have most required hand tools so expect to do my own basic mant. like oil changes, tranny fluid changes, rear end fluid changes, filter changes and tire rotations. Does that lower the $0.40 you mentined? Do you...

    Working the numbers and confused

Mr. Moose....I have considered that. I have however traveled significantly in the the past for my job (two or three weeks at a time) so travel is not the issue. (I'm 55 so not exactly wet behind the ears) Like I said, I have considered it, but when I look at the up front investment, and the...

    Working the numbers and confused

OVM, I'd say your a professional who understands the business part of the business. Thank you for your WISDOM. Now back to the original question. If we use the $0.40 per mile as cost, and $0.70 per mile as income, and use the "posted average of 1800 miles per week , then it works out to...

    Working the numbers and confused

Thanks OVM!! The answer is YES!! I would trade $15 all day long for $150-$300!!! That's a 10x to 20x increase. Seems like a "no-brainer" to me. Just had to ask the question, as I see in posts a lot of rigs that sit for ??? Unless I have something very wrong, if it isn't moving loaded, it...
