Air Filter Problems

Any one have a Fleatguard or Donaldson air filter come apart on a M2.

Filter was installed at schedualed pm and about 2k miles later it looks like this, came apart all at once and caused damage to turbo etc...

waiting 3 weeks for manufacture to get back to us on warrenty for filter that is supposed to cover damage to the truck also

brandnew out of the box at speedco, who got it from fleetguard, who says donaldson makes it for them

The air filters you get at speedco for the APU was doing the same thing. Sucked it right in.

Have you talked to Speeco about the problem? They damaged my truck a couple of years ago, stripped the oil pan, and they had it taken care of in a couple of days. Layoutshooter

Talked to speedco sent them pictures they said its a fleetguard filter and backedup by fleetguard, talked to fleetguard and speedco had already talked to them, sent the filter to fleetguard at their request on their fedex account, fleetguard says never seen anything like it and filter was maid by donaldson for them, fleetguard sent the filter to donaldson to have it checkedout, fleetguard says its up to donaldson to say why it failed

I havent talked to donaldson directly yet, been going up the chain at fleetguard whos name brand is what was purchased at speedco

6 speed manual and MBE906 engine we were running on cruse at about 65mph on almost level groung.

Well that blows my theory,sometimes lugging an engine nearly stalling can reverse the direction of rotation of the engine causing air to come in the exhaust and out thru the intake and then heat could have caused this but thats clearly not the problem and I'm not so sure the filter done that to the turbo rather the turbo done that to the filter,its realy hard to tell from the picture but it appearsthe shaft is bent on the turbine or fan.when the turbo blew alot of pressure went both ways quicker than you can blink and would put undo stress and heat on that type of element

The old 2-stroke Detroits were famous for that? Does it still happen to modern day engines?

I'm wondering about the "chicken or the egg" thing with this air filter. When a turbo goes it can definitely damage an air filter.

I haven't heard of it happening in a long time,it only happened to me once back in the early 80's in a brand new mack dump truck and I wasn't used to the clutch.And I would almost bet money on the turbo being the cause but I can't bet on a picture and I know it's a pretty hard pill to swallow,it's not a cheap repair but I'm sure the engineers are allover that filter.It shouldn't take them long to figure it out but then again its not there truck.

I dont think that we can blame this one on the turbo, I have pictures of the back side of the ellement that show fine fibers of the ellement coming out in the direction of the air flow. Cant post a picture here because of image size. If the failure was from the turbo side then the fibers should be pushed the other way.

It looks to me like a large chunk of the filter came out and went into the turbo, turbo spinning at 100k+ rpm could not take the strain of grinding the filter ellement material, bent the shaft and took a blade off, the "highly flamable" filter material flash burned in the damaged turbo leaving some burned ellement material behinded.

If the turbo had failed and damaged the filter then there should be filter material in the turbo that came down after the turbo failed and that I do not find. I think also if the turbo went first that most of the missing ellement should be pushed up into the paper part of the filter and its not there, its just gone.

Thats why I said I wouldn't bet on the picture.without an up front and personal look and with more details from your last post you may be right but if we all agreed we wouldn't have something interesting to ponder.I do hope it was the filter so you can maybe recoup your loses.

What does the upper honey comb type filter look like assuming it was in place? How many miles on the motor? Overall sux for sure, i feel for you.
