5 tips to help you become a FAST Commercial Driver

What is the FAST program?

The Free and Secure Trade (FAST) program is a joint Canada-U.S. initiative involving the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the United States Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

FAST supports moving pre-approved eligible goods across the border quickly and verifying trade compliance away from the border.

It is a harmonized commercial process offered to pre-approved importers, carriers, and registered drivers. Shipments for approved companies, transported by approved carriers using registered drivers, will be cleared into either country with greater speed and certainty, and at a reduced cost of compliance.

Many expedited carriers were quick to see the benefits of participation in this program and moved quickly to "enroll" their fleets. 

For those yet to take part in this program, here are some tips from the Canada Border Services Agency:

1. Visit, www.cbsa.gc.ca/fast to complete and print the application form.

2. Find answers to your questions by:

3. Complete all boxes on the application form.

4. Include your payment of $80.00 CDN or $50.00 U.S. with your application.

5. Bring the following documentation with you to the FAST Enrollment Centre:

Call-in letter Original proof of Canadian or U.S. citizenship or permanent residency Original Canadian or U.S. drivers license Original documentation pertaining to rehabilitation and waivers, if applicable

What can FAST drivers expect at the border?

Northbound into Canada

Present your valid FAST Driver Registration Card Present the FAST-approved importer and carrier bar codes Shipment may be examined at any time

Southbound into United States

Present your valid FAST Driver Registration Card Electronic data transmissions along with corresponding carrier bar codes and/or transponder technology will provide names of both the importer and carrier along with the contents of the shipment Shipment may be examined at any time

Personal Documentation

Be prepared to make a declaration for any personal goods you bring across the border
