The Transportation Security Administration announced it has completed more than 1 million background checks on truck drivers that apply for hazmat endorsements on commercial driver’s licenses.

By late December, TSA said the Hazardous Material Endorsement (HME) Threat Assessment Program has reviewed 1,015,660 applications in its four-year existence, approving more than 1 million.

“Truckers are another set of eyes on the road and are part of the security network,” said TSA Deputy Administrator Gale Rossides. “They play a vital role in keeping our freeways, streets, counties and cities safe.”

TSA didn’t mention whether the millionth trucker investigated won a prize.

Drivers are required to renew the TSA background assessment at least every five years, though a state may require more frequent renewals.
