Truck Crash Closes Stretch of I-75 Near Detroit

A 2-mile stretch of Interstate 75 near Detroit is closed indefinitely after a car crashed into a tanker truck carrying gasoline and diesel fuel Wednesday night.

No one was killed in the crash, which closed the highway from 8 Mile Road in the south to I-696 in the north after the resulting fire caused the collapse of the 9 Mile Road overpass.

According to the Detroit Free Press , a car driver lost control, while driving about 70 mph in a curve with a suggested speed of 50, and hit the tanker truck, causing the tractor and trailer to separate. Police credited the "alert" driver of a second truck that took evasive action to move out of the tanker's way, avoiding a potentially more devastating crash.

The tanker driver was treated and released from a local hospital.

That stretch of I-75 carries more than 160,000 vehicles a day. Detours could put more traffic onto I-94 in Detroit and the east-side suburbs, the Free Press
