Take note: Primary elections season is here

Truckers out on the road across the country should keep an eye on the calendar. Primary elections are scheduled in states all over the map in the coming weeks.

Voters in California, Iowa, Montana, New Mexico and South Dakota will cast primary ballots Tuesday, June 5, for federal and state offices. New Jersey voters can choose who they want on the fall ballots for U.S. House and Senate seats. Meanwhile, voters in Wisconsin can take part in a recall election for governor.

On June 12, voters in six more states – Arkansas, Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina and Virginia – can cast ballots for U.S. and state lawmakers.

Also holding state primaries this month are Colorado, New York, Oklahoma and Utah. Voters in these states will head to the ballot box on June 26.

With the exception of Iowa, Maine, North Dakota and Wisconsin – where same-day registration is available – truckers who have yet to register to vote in their home state won’t be able to turn in the appropriate paperwork in time for the June primaries.

Professional drivers who miss their deadline shouldn’t throw in the towel. There is still time to get registered for Election Day in November.

Georgia will hold a primary election on July 31. On Aug. 2, Tennessee voters will cast ballots, while Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington will hold primaries on Aug. 7. The following week, on Aug. 14, Connecticut, Florida, Minnesota and Wisconsin will hold primaries.

Later in the month, voters in Alaska, Arizona, Vermont and Wyoming can cast ballots. In September, seven more states will do the same.

Truckers who are registered to vote should make the effort to cast their ballots. Although primary elections typically don’t receive the same attention as the fall election, they can be just as, if not more, important.

Races for various elected offices will be trimmed in the lead up to November. A variety of other issues, and many that are of significance to the trucking industry, also will be on ballots.

To encourage truckers to get involved in the process, OOIDA is once again focused on providing truckers with information on how to register in all 50 states and on early voting and absentee ballots – where available.

Visit TruckVote.com for more information. Those truckers who do not have Web access – or those who have questions or need assistance – can call the OOIDA Membership Department at 800-444-5791, Ext. 4906.
