Florida chapter receives 17 bicycles for kids with life-threatening medical conditions

MARCO ISLAND, FLA -  Speedco management from all 51 nationwide locations gathered recently in Marco Island for their annual conference and a little team building. And by team building, we mean they split up into teams and built 17 bicycles that they donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundations Southern Florida chapter for distribution to area children with life-threatening medical conditions.

"We've adopted the Make-A-Wish Foundation as our corporate charity recipient," said Mark Clark, Speedco President. "The bike build contest was a hands-on way our team could learn and serve at the same time, he added."

The teams competed for accessory parts by answering trivia questions about themes they learned during their meetings. Joe DuQuesnay, General Manager of the Speedco store in Aurora, Ore., won a horn and bike lock to add to his teams bike.

"One of the greatest things we can do is to take care of those in need," said DuQuesnay. "Its a large part of the Speedco culture and I'm proud to be a part of it."

Connie Martin, senior special events coordinator for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida, was excited about the donation. "This has to be one of the most creative donations that Ive received on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Its really great to see the excitement the group has for the kids, she said."

To date, Speedco has donated more than $175,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation through various in-store and truck show promotions.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Born in 1980 when a group of caring volunteers helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 67 chapters in the United States and its territories.

With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes and has granted more than 161,000 wishes in the United States since its inception. For more information about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, visit www.wish.org
