CHARLESTON, W.Va.  —  It's the most-traveled bridge in the state. Now officials are taking steps to renovate the Interstate 64 span that carries motorists over the Kanawha River in downtown Charleston.

The state Division of Highways said Thursday that renovations to the six-lane bridge will start this fall.

The renovations include painting and surface work. The DOH also is considering lighting the bridge and is asking residents for their input. A public hearing on the project will be held June 9 at Charleston City Hall.

The DOH says the bridge carries more than 100,000 cars and trucks over the river every day and has been a city landmark since 1975.
