Ohio joins truck-only lane study
Ohio has joined Indiana, Illinois and Missouri in a study of building truck-only lanes on Interstate 70.
The 800-mile stretch of I-70 in the four states has already been designated a “Corridor of the Future†by Washington – meaning the states will be eligible for priority use of federal highway dollars.
OOIDA officials generally support the concept of truck lanes but remain concerned about funding and the burden truckers may be asked to bear for something that affects all vehicle classes.
OOIDA Executive Vice President Todd Spencer said truck-only lanes might be “something to think about,†but the cost would be prohibitive.
“Truck lanes are nice to talk about in concept, but in reality the tremendous amount of money needed to make it happen would not be possible without increases on fees that trucking users pay,†said Spencer. “We suspect that truck-only lanes can’t happen without being toll roads.â€
