Obama says U.S., Saudi Arabia must reduce dependence on oil
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says the U.S. and Saudi Arabia must take steps to reduce dependence on oil to boost their economies and reduce threats to the planet from climate change.
That's the message Obama says he'll deliver to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia when they meet next Wednesday in Riyadh.
Obama says it doesn't serve either country to have economies constantly disrupted by huge spikes in energy prices.
Oil prices closed above $65 a barrel Thursday for the first time in six months. Gas prices have climbed steadily in recent weeks.
Obama says the goal at home has to be to promote clean energy solutions that strengthen the economy, put people to work and diversify U.S. energy sources.
