HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The State Highway Administration is temporarily closing the ramp from southbound Interstate 81 to eastbound Interstate 70 in Hagerstown.

The ramp from I-81, known as Maryland Veterans Memorial Highway, to eastbound I-70, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway, closes Wednesday and is expected to reopen on May 20.

State highway officials say the work is part of a $3.4 million project to improve safety at the interchange, which carries 55,000 vehicles per day. About a third of that is truck traffic.

Traffic will be detoured to the exit for U.S. Route 11, onto northbound I-81, then to eastbound I-70.
