CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Truck-maker Freightliner plans 500 more layoffs in North Carolina.

The Charlotte Observer reports 420 employees will lose their jobs at the Rowan County plant and 80 more workers will be laid off in Gastonia. The latest layoffs will take place May 8.

In less than a week, Freightliner will let go more than 2,000 workers from across the state.

Freightliner officials blame deteriorating economic and market conditions for significantly reducing truck orders.

The Gastonia plant makes truck parts and components, while the Rowan County plant manufactures heavy duty trucks.
