Express-1 becomes a Smartway Transport Partner
Jeff Curry, President of Express-1, announced today that Express-1 has signed an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to become a SmartWay Transport Partner.
According to EPA, the SmartWay Transport Partnership is an “innovative collaboration between EPA and the freight sector designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissionsâ€.
As a SmartWay partner, Express-1 has made a commitment to show improvement within two to three years in the amount and type of fuel burned by its fleet. Express-1 is one of an elite group of carriers to enter into partnership with EPA.
“Express-1’s core values include being a good neighbor and giving back to our community. Becoming a SmartWay partner gives us a way to impact not only our local community but anywhere in the US where our trucks travel,†Curry said. “We are pleased to partner with EPA on such an important effort as reducing air pollution.â€
Companies that participate in SmartWay programs save money, reduce fuel consumption and are recognized for their social responsibility and leadership, according to EPA.
The first step to becoming a SmartWay partner is completing a baseline assessment of the fleet. This assessment shows the kind and type of tires used, whether or not the trucks are equipped with auxiliary power units, whether drivers purchase biodiesel fuel and the aerodynamics of the vehicles. All of these factors are used by EPA to rate the fleet’s overall fuel efficiency. This assessment is redone annually and used by EPA to document improvements.
Since Express-1’s fleet is owner-operator based, the company will rely upon communication and training to inform truck owners about the cost savings and advantages of making their trucks more fuel efficient.
Converting from duel to single tires, using idle-reduction technology, using alternative fuels and making sure the vehicle is aerodynamically sound are actions truck owners can take to reduce their fuel costs. “Not only will truck owners benefit from our SmartWay partnership, but our customer base is becoming more interested in doing business with carriers who demonstrate their social responsibility in this way,†said Curry. “We want our current and future customers to know of our commitment to improving every aspect of how we do business.â€
