EPA issues diesel reduction grants

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted money to reduce diesel emissions in several states, including funding creation of up to 200 electrified truck parking spaces in Tennessee.

The agency has awarded $2 million to the Tennessee Department of Transportation under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program.

The Recovery Act allotted the National Clean Diesel Campaign $300 million, of which this funding assistance program received $156 million to fund competitive grants nationwide. The Recovery Act also included $20 million for the National Clean Diesel Emerging Technology Program grants and $30 million for the SmartWay Clean Diesel Finance Program grants.

Also, under the act’s State Clean Diesel Grant program, a total of $88.2 million has been provided to states for clean diesel projects through a non-competitive allocation process.

Other individual recipients of the EPA grants are:
Montana, Colorado, South Dakota and Utah will benefit from $850,000 awarded to Oregon-based Cascade Sierra Solutions, which will use the funds to provide emissions control solutions for over-the road diesel trucks. South Carolina’s State Ports Authority has received nearly $2 million to repower and retrofit cargo handling and other diesel equipment at the Port of Charleston. It will also support the partnering with private companies to repower two tugboats, one dredge and installation of diesel multi-filters on 40 drayage trucks. Mecklenburg County, N.C., has received more than $1.1 million to replace and repower diesel engines in the metropolitan area. This will provide funding for 28 or more repowers and six or more replacements of non-road construction equipment, stationary diesel engines or highway diesel engines in the 13-county bi-state region for the 2008 ozone standard.
