Engine group estimates DEF use

The Engine Manufacturers Association has developed estimates for how much diesel exhaust fluid will be needed by U.S. and Canadian on-highway vehicles from 2010 to 2019.


The numbers will be helpful as the industry works to make sure the infrastructure and supply is in place for the urea-based fluid, needed for Selective Catalytic Reduction technology being used in most engines to meet 2010 emissions standards.


For 2010, the EMA estimates 54.56 million gallons of DEF will be used. By 2019, that number rises to 1.34 billion gallons.


The numbers were compiled from engine manufacturers' confidential DEF consumption estimates. Each manufacturer developed its estimates from proprietary information such as engine sales forecasts, vehicle miles traveled estimates, and DEF dosing rates.
