DOT Freight Transportation Index jumps 4.1% in July

The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index jumped 4.1% in July from a year ago, the largest July-over-July gain in four years.
 

The freight TSI rose to a reading of 112.9, from last July’s 108.4, DOT said Wednesday

The index rose 1.2% in July from the June, its fourth straight month-to-month gain.

The freight index has increased in six of the first seven months this year, declining only in March, DOT said. It has risen 4.2% this year, the largest gain for the first seven months of the year since 2002.

The TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
