Diesel up 4.5 cents, first increase in 7 weeks

WASHINGTON — The average price for a gallon of diesel increase nearly a nickel, giving back two weeks of declines. Diesel prices had fallen for six consecutive weeks.

Officially, the nationwide retail on-highway price for a gallon of diesel was $3.828, up 4.5 cents, according to the Jan. 9 report by the Energy Information Administration of the Department of Energy.

The East Coast regions saw the biggest increases, up about 6 cents, while the price rose less than a penny in the Rocky Mountain region.

New England had the highest regional price at $4.029, though the state premium in California brought the average cost of a gallon of diesel there to $4.111.

The Midwest had the lowest average price, $3.717, just edging the Gulf Coast region at $3.75.

Diesel prices nationally still are up 49.5 cents a gallon from a year ago.
