Class 8 truck sales surge 16.5 percent in May
Sales of Class 8 trucks in May continued the up-down pattern established in the first five months of 2017, surging 16.5 percent over April, a month in which when sales were down 6.5 percent from March, according to data provided by WardsAuto.
The year began with a 30 percent decline in January from the previous month (sales are generally always strong in December) and sales post 2.3 percent and 32.1 percent gains in February and March, respectively.
Total sales for 2017 continued at a snail’s pace when compared with 2016.
Through May 2017, sales totaled 67,012 compared with 85,804 at the same point in 2016, a 21.9 percent decline.
Every OEM except Western Star posted gains in May with Freightliner leading the pack with a 39 percent gain.
The next closest was Mack with a 10.8 percent gain, followed by Volvo which was up 10.2 percent.
Needless to say, sales by every OEM are down in 2017.
