Bus crash in northern California kills 10, injures 38
The California Highway Patrol says a charter bus that overturned in northern California Sunday night, Oct. 5, was operating with an invalid Texas license plate and registration. Of the 43 passengers, most of whom were Laotian, eight died and dozens were injured in the crash.
The Associated Press reported Monday, Oct. 6, that the driver of the bus was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
“We believe he was driving under the influence of something,†said Robert Kays, California Highway Patrol spokesman.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the bus was taking people to a casino when it overturned on a county road near Williams, about 50 miles northwest of Sacramento.
A highway patrolman said the driver veered off the highway, lost control and spun out. Then the bus rolled completely over, ending up back on its wheels. In the process, some passengers were thrown out and the roof of the bus was crushed in.
The bus had Greyhound markings, but company officials said it sold the vehicle two years ago.
