LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Motorists in central Kentucky will soon get a sobering reminder to stash the cell phone until they are safely off the road.

The National Safety Council has begun a nationwide campaign called "Death By Cell Phone" that includes billboards in Lexington and Frankfort.

The billboards feature pictures of a 61-year-old woman from Oklahoma and a 12-year-old boy from Michigan who were killed in car crashes caused by drivers using cell phones.

The NSC hopes the campaign will persuade drivers to think twice before hitting "send" while behind the wheel. The council estimates over 600,000 accidents and 2,500 deaths are caused each year by drivers using cell phones.

The Kentucky billboards will be seen by over 20,000 people a day.
