ATA releases industry report
A
2007 annual state-of-the-industry report indicates there are nearly 3.5
million truck drivers and that Canada is the U.S. top trading partner.
The
American Trucking Associations issued American Trucking Trends
2008-2009, considered a trucking industry almanac, indicating 8.9
million people were employed in U.S. trucking industry jobs. Commercial
trucks made up 12.5 percent of registered vehicles, but paid 36.5
percent of total highway-user taxes in 2006.
In 2007, trucks
transported nearly 58 percent of the trade value between the United
States and Canada, up more than 3 percent from 2006. Trucks transported
66 percent of the trade value between the United States and Mexico, a
nearly 5 percent increase, with Mexico ranking third as a U.S. trade
partner.
American Trucking Trends 2008-2009 reported trucks
used for business purposes logged 432.9 billion miles in 2006. Class 8
trucks accounted for 139.3 billion miles, an increase from 130.5
billion in 2005. Finally, trucks consumed 53.9 billion gallons of fuel
for business purposes and paid $37.4 billion in federal and state
highway-user taxes.
