A 2007 annual state-of-the-industry report indicates there are nearly 3.5 million truck drivers and that Canada is the U.S. top trading partner.

The American Trucking Associations issued American Trucking Trends 2008-2009, considered a trucking industry almanac, indicating 8.9 million people were employed in U.S. trucking industry jobs. Commercial trucks made up 12.5 percent of registered vehicles, but paid 36.5 percent of total highway-user taxes in 2006.

In 2007, trucks transported nearly 58 percent of the trade value between the United States and Canada, up more than 3 percent from 2006. Trucks transported 66 percent of the trade value between the United States and Mexico, a nearly 5 percent increase, with Mexico ranking third as a U.S. trade partner.

American Trucking Trends 2008-2009 reported trucks used for business purposes logged 432.9 billion miles in 2006. Class 8 trucks accounted for 139.3 billion miles, an increase from 130.5 billion in 2005. Finally, trucks consumed 53.9 billion gallons of fuel for business purposes and paid $37.4 billion in federal and state highway-user taxes.
