ARLINGTON, Va. — The American Trucking Associations on Wednesday released Safety for the Long Haul , a comprehensive text on large truck safety. The book, written by Dr. Ron Knipling, encompasses more than 100 specific topics relating to large truck crash risk, causation, countermeasures, safety management and safety policy.

“The trucking industry continues to advance an aggressive safety agenda and providing the most current information is key to that mission” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “ Safety for the Long Haul is the definitive source of the critical information needed to support the safety initiatives of our members and other transportation organizations.”

Published by ATA, Safety for the Long Haul is written for safety managers, fleet managers and executives, government and industry officials, researchers and other transportation safety professionals.

“ Safety for the Long Haul helps build an understanding of truck safety by placing it in the greater context of road safety, “ said Knipling. “The book identifies high-risk road and traffic situations, and profiles causes and countermeasures for eight specific important truck crash types, including road departure, rear-end, and lane change/merge crashes.”

Regulatory compliance is recognized as a foundation for safe operations. Safety for the Long Haul details safety practices which transcend compliance with government regulations. Chapters include The Science of Safety, Driver Risk, Driver Error, Driver Fatigue, 4-Wheelers, Vehicle Design & Technologies, The Roadway & Traffic Environment, Crash Types, Carrier Safety Management, Special Topics in Carrier Operations & Safety, Regulations, Enforcement & Compliance and Beyond Compliance.
