Located between Statesville and Winston-Salem, Mocksville NC is home to All-State Express, Inc., the subject of our latest fleet profile.

Although currently a modest-sized company, All-State is in the process of expansion with the recent acquisition of Best Direct of Raleigh, NC. Operating with a current fleet size of 20 units, all of whom are independent contractors, All-State specializes in time-sensitive freight, mainly general commodities. This privately-owned company was founded in 1995 with an operating area of 48 states and Canada.

Spencer Squier, CEO, tells us he didn't begin his transportation career in expediting; "I was working in the courier business specializing in medical supplies when I first discovered the opportunity in expediting. I purchased a straight truck, got my own authority and acquired a few accounts. In April 1995 I opened All-State Express and we have been growing ever since."

The company currently utilizes mainly C and D size units with the occasional van depending upon location of the freight. Spencer tells us that they are now looking to add class 8 owner/operators in many northern areas with the idea that the O/O will be pulling All-State logo'd trailers soon. "We're beginning to move into the more traditional expedited freight lanes such as Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Kentucky," says Spencer.

"We're also looking for motivated people in unit sizes from vans to tractors in areas such as Georgia, Illinois, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Massachusetts. We work as partners with those independent expediters with their own authority. We also have a close partnership with carriers such as Eagle USA, MSAS, Bax Global and others. Some of our corporate customers include Caterpillar, Federal Mogul, MetaKote and a number of other satisfied shippers."

Spencer adds, "For the shippers, our rates are extremely competitive. We feel we provide a Cadillac service at a Yugo price. We offer guaranteed pick-up times with a money back guarantee. Happily, our customers don't find it necessary to use that guarantee very often at all. Our contractors are among the best in the industry and we're quite proud of our fleet!"

For potential All-State Express contractors the company offers bi-weekly settlements, no forced dispatch and inexpensive insurance. A CDL is preferred but not required. Communication between contractor and company is with nationwide cell phones and Q pagers.

The company offers a negotiable deadhead pay policy and also pays a finders fee for new business referrals presented to the company by a contractor. "Being a smaller company, we listen to and value the input from our contractors. We like to feel we work in partnership WITH them, and to that end, I maintain an open-door policy with our fleet. We also make a concerted effort to find our trucks those backhauls that keep empty miles to a minimum."

Spencer also tells us, "It's been exciting watching this company grow from start-up just a little over five years ago to it's current level. We're looking forward to a bright future and would welcome any ambitious expediters out there to share that future with us."
