homeTruckThree_1.jpgEight years ago, Matt Hare and Mike McDougal, both with family ties in trucking, (Hare’s grandfather started the first family trucking company in 1928), decided to start their own trucking company.   Using the seventy years of trucking business experience between them, Hare and McDougal chose the expediting field and established Matrix Expedited Service located in Flint Michigan.   Their decision on both expediting and location works well with the strong automotive customer base they have developed.

Matrix has grown over the eight years to a fully certified fleet_1.jpg100-truck company having semis with 53' air ride trailers, 24' straight trucks, 13' straight trucks, cargo vans and sprinters to service their 48 state and Canada freight.   Hare and McDougal do not plan to grow too big, wanting to stop at around 150 trucks; their reason is to keep a personal hands-on working relationship with their drivers, contractors and customers.  “The partners said, “With a smaller company, we can provide a good driver to dispatcher ratio and the drivers and customers receive personal attention.”

Hare and McDougal take an interest in the well-being of their drivers.   All of Matrix Expedited Service trucks are equipped with inverters and as new trucks come in to replace older trucks or to grow the fleet, APUs and refrigerators are standard equipment.   McDougal says, “We are very interested in the health of our drivers.   We want to educate them on how to get and remain healthy first off, then provide the tools to do so in our trucks.   I even keep apples and oranges on my desk instead of the usual candy to give to drivers and visitors who stop by my office.”

Community involvement is very important to both partners.   Matrix Expedited Service participates in Operation Good Cheer that provides Christmas presents to underprivileged children and adults with disabilities in Michigan.   Matrix also supports their local Marine’s Toys for Tots campaign and the local Crim Festival of Races held in Flint yearly that promotes healthy lifestyles.   McDougal has a dream that someday, one of Matrix Expedited Service’s drivers will compete in the Crim event.

A few contractors are sought from the southeastern area of the country to service Matrix’s growing customer base in that region.   Company drivers are always welcome to apply at Matrix.   “We require two years experience of our drivers with a clean driving and criminal record,” Hare states.   “Most of our drivers come from Michigan or nearby states, but we are starting to hire out of the southeast and Texas due to the growth of freight availability in those areas; we would consider top quality drivers from other areas as well.  We hire both solos and teams.”
