eds18.jpgRush Trucking is a minority-owned transportation group founded in 1984 by Andra M. Rush, a Mohawk Native American. Headquartered in Wayne, Michigan, Rush is a leader in truckload transportation for short-haul, long-haul and just-in-time operations.

Also based in Wayne is Expedited Delivery Service (EDS), an affiliated corporation of Rush Trucking.  This privately-owned, non-asset based organization was formed in 1997 in response to the burgeoning expedite market and to service the needs of Rush customers seeking a "one-call," custom expedited transportation solution.  EDS bills itself as the "Elite" division of Rush Trucking.

EDS is authorized for 48 states and Canada with its primary freight lanes in the Midwest and Central states - anywhere east of the Mississippi.  The company also has a steady shipment flow in and out of Laredo, TX.

The organization has an impressive customer list that includes Ford Motor, Daimler Chrysler, General Motors, Toyota, Honda, and many Tier 1 automotive suppliers.  The carrier's shipments are primarily from vendors to automotive plants.

The EDS fleet of 50 straight trucks and tractors is composed of 100% owner-operators.  Of course, CDL's are required of drivers and a Haz-Mat endorsement is preferred.

For communication between dispatch and fleet, the ubiquitous Qualcomm system is utilized with a first in-first out policy. Contractor issues are handled by the POD Supervisor or the Operations Manager.

Jeff Braden, EDS Director of Safety and Recruiting, is a 20-year emergency freight veteran.  After a 19.5-year stint at another major expedited carrier, he joined EDS five months ago.

He tells us, "Our tractors are averaging between 2500-3,000 miles a week and the average length of haul is around 400 miles.  The mileage rate figures out to an average of around $1.30 per mile."

"A successful EDS owner-operator is someone who is not looking to be home every weekend.  He should be willing to be out on the road at least 7-10 days at a time."

He adds, "The driver can't be picky about what kind of freight he's hauling and he can't wait for that 'perfect' run."

Braden goes on to say that his company is actively seeking tractor (tractors only) owner-operators to pull EDS trailers.

The truck should be a 6 years or newer sleeper-equipped tractor and owner-operators domiciled east of the Mississippi River are preferred.  Of course, teams are welcome.
