What is too many miles?

Heart of Dixie

Expert Expediter
I have looked at several used trucks with Cummins, sleeved engines. The truck I have narrowed the search down to seems to have been very well taken care of, but has 525 K miles on it. The owner has agreed to have an oil analysis done on the engine, transmission and the rear end. I have spoken with Cummins and they said to expect (with proper maint) 750 - 800K miles before an in-frame major.

My question is: If the oil checks out, do you think this is too many miles and therefore too much of a risk? The truck is a T-300 KW.

Thanks for the input.

Those miles are about right assuming proper maintenance. It may require some repair but not any of the hard parts. Heading to 800,000 plus and I would say you are pushing your luck. Most OEM charts show rebuild or replacement recommended in the 750,000 range for the smaller engines. Class 8 or big block engines should go to a million or more before your at the same criteria.
That is taking into account proper maintenance ect.
