Truck length

What determines the allowable length of a straight truck when the laws vary from state to state? There are 28 states that have a 40' limit and other states vary from 42'6" to 70'. That 70' straight truck should be fun to drive. This info is from The Motor Carriers Road Atlas. Has anyone ever been cited for overlength, where did they get cited, and how much overlength were they? Thanks for the info.

Any straight truck over 40 feet is generally exempt from DOT regulations as it would be used exclusively for agricultral or mining use,In most cases they cannot be operated on US Highways unless they have some type of special permit within their home state. Can you imagine coming up Van :censoredsign: some Friday night in July with a 70 footer.
