Looking to demonstrate their commitment to balancing the budget, Republicans are increasingly targeting the federal workforce.
In the past month, congressional Republicans have tried to attach to several bills language that would limit pay increases for federal workers. This week, as part of a GOP amendment to a Democratic bill that would spend billions on unemployment benefits and help states fund their Medicaid programs, Senate Republicans are including a proposal that would freeze pay levels for the 2 million people who work for the government.

I own a construction company in Houston. In the past 2 years I've laid off 75% of my workforce, reduced salaries twice, taken away virtually all company paid benefits in an effort to keep the doors open. I laid off people who had been with my company since I started 11 years ago. My sales volume has been reduced by 70%, and after losing money last year, we're breaking even so far in 2010. I'm not alone, been reading the threads, I know that everyone in business has suffered.
It's nice to know that my Federal, State and Local governments have not had to take such draconian measures. After all, they perform such an essential service, why should they have to suffer.
