Strong demand points to tightening truckload capacity, ACT says
Increased truckload freight demand is showing up in surging trailer sales, says ACT Research.
Commercial trailer orders were up 168 percent year over year in February and hit their highest level in two years, the research firm reports. Dry-van trailer orders posted triple digit increases on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis.
In its latest report on the trailer market, ACT noted widespread improvement in February, with year-over-year growth in seven of the nine trailer segments.
Refrigerated van orders, which held up best during the recession, were up 45 percent from a year ago. Total trailer order backlogs were at their highest level in 17 months.
"Over the past several weeks, numerous indicators and comments from trucking companies have pointed to a rapid tightening of truck capacity," said Kenny Vieth, partner and senior analyst with ACT. "The strong dry van orders, especially one large order from a major private carrier, indicate increasing optimism within the truckload industry," he said.
