Not usually into baseball, but news is news.
Tigers drafted Frederick Porcello, a high school senior with an 8-0 record and a 0.50 ERA and a perfect game this year (throwing just 77 pitches in that game). His fastball is in the mid 90s, which makes me wonder...
Are the Tigers going to use him up like Fidrych? At 18 yrs old, bones are not done growing. Nolan Ryan lasted until his 40s, throwing almost as fast as when he was 20. He did it using the curve until his arm was fully developed, then switched to the fastball. Why aren't teams using this method, or are they? Maybe I'm wrong and they do support this. But I also see many hard throwing rookies entering the league, which makes me think they'd rather use em up and go to the next potential kid star.
Granted, Porcello has a hard curve and offspeed pitch in his repetoir. I hope for his sake he'll use those more than the heat.
