Temecula, CA

While resting up and resetting our log books, we've been enjoying a very nice stay at the Pechanga RV Park and casino in Temecula, CA; about an hour north of San Diego on I-15 (take the CA-79 exit. Go East. Follow signs to the casino and RV park).

The RV park itself is a bit picky about the vehicles they let in. Requirements include holding tanks, a kitchen, toilet and stand-up shower. Thus, tents and pop-up RV trailers are not permitted. They allowed our truck in since it meets the requirements.

The RV park is a short walk from the casino. 24 hours a day, a free shuttle is on call for you if you do not want to walk. Call, and they will come to your site to shuttle you to and from the casino. The casino has 8 resturants and a food court. We enjoyed very good food at a couple of them.

The clerk at the park desk said they have a reputation for being "tidy." He was not kidding. The grounds, bathrooms, showers and casino are immaculate. So much so that I started checking for dirt. There was none to be found. It is as if they went into every corner with a Q-Tip to keep things clean.

Most impressive, to me at least, is the history of this place. The Pechanga people have been living in this valley for 10,000 years. Having an interest in history, it is delightful to not only read about the Pechanga people but to visit in person with the decendants of the first people who lived here. Needless to say, their view of illegal immigration is a bit broader than those in the news today.

You can read about the Pechanga people on their web site. Using casino proceeds they are building a cultural center and investing in their history.

I spent some time looking up at one of the tall rocky hills that form the valley and that are common in this part of California. There is no development up there. The terrain is too rough. It is an emotional experience to gaze on such a hill and realize I'm seeing the exact same thing others saw 10,000 years ago. I feel honored to be a welcome guest in this valley on Pechanga land.

The casino has a truck and bus parking area near the RV park. While security is everywhere, no one seems to bother the trucks parked there overnight. Next to that parking area is a 24 hour convenience store with public rest rooms.

Expediting continues to delight us every day. While prohibited from driving because we are out of log book hours, we can use this time and place to eat good food, enjoy clean showers, and expand our knowledge of this great land and its many cultures.
