Tech Suggestions for New Independent Courier

To the point: I plan to start a one-person courier business in a small city (about 24k population) doing medical, document, and office supply deliveries...

The question: What is the least expensive or most capable (cost still being a factor) software available for managing this business, either self-hosted via my own website online AND/OR installed on a tablet that can be mounted in the vehicle? Does such an animal even exist?

Features? Tracking deliveries made with phone/tablet photos I believe would be a must, as well as signature capability in leu of. I think I can manage the routing manually, but that would be a "nice to have" feature. Payment via CC and/or Paypal at time the pickup request is made either via the website OR manually keyed. I don't REALLY want to sign up to a subscription/cloud service as I already know the cost for that will be outrageous in the grand scheme of a one- or two-person operation.

Thanks in Advance for any suggestions or help here.

I stumbled on this June 2025 post while searching for small business forums. It's been a year, so you've probably sorted it, but this might help anyone else landing here with the same questions.

Yes, cheap options exist. For self-hosted setups to keep costs down, look into WordPress + WooCommerce with delivery plugins, or the open-source community version of Odoo on a tablet.

To give you an idea, I run a small local waste management and hauling business, and we managed to automate our entire dispatching and tracking setup using CurbWaste. Even though they focus on hauling, their driver app handles tablet routing, photo proof, and signatures perfectly. It’s worth checking out how adjacent industries handle logistics, as the tech carries over well.

OP, if you're still around, what setup did you go with?
