Something to consider

Hey everyone,

I got a call from the manager of EGL on Friday asking if I wanted to work the weekend. He was pretty excited & said it would be "very lucrative". What it involved was if the Tigers won the game vs. Oakland that EGL had a contract to deliver T-shirts celebrating the Tigers win.

I was told that if the Tigers won on Sat. nite, to be there at 6AM Sunday morning ready to go. I said I'd do it. The Tigers ended up winning. I wasn't tired & couldn't get to sleep. I knew w/ the times I go to bed I wouldn't wake up in time, so what I did was head down there early & figured I'd sleep in my truck. I got there at 3AM, saw the manager, & let him know to wake me up at 6AM. I go to sleep & woke up at 10:30. I walk into the office wondering why no one woke me up. I soon found out why. There were drivers who still weren't loaded & they were peeved.

That's because there were a lot of drivers who were all there at 6AM & only so many people to load em up. I finally got loaded at 11:30 & I wasn't the last guy out. Some of the people there were def. less than thrilled. A few said if they won the World Series that there was no way they'd do this again.

Now, this all happened on a Sunday. Had it happened during the week when these drivers had their regular freight to deliver it would have been even more chaotic.

With all that in mind. The runs I took WERE profitable. By far the best single financial day I had in the year I've been at EGL. I went from Metro Airport to Jackson, Battle Creek, Portage (near Kalamazoo), Holland, Comstock Park, Kentwood (Grand Rapids), & 2 stops in Lansing. Then back to my house in Flint.

I want to make it clear I have NO AUTHORITY to give any runs. I'm simply a driver there & hell, the first shift forklift driver doesn't know who I am. So again I have NO AUTHORITY to give out any runs or say if they'll even use ya.

Based on what some drivers have said about never doing this again, I would think EGL will be needing some help if the Tigers happen to win the World Series. Especially if it's during the week.

It'll be chaotic for sure. If ya get there at 6 don't count on leaving b4 noon. So plan on either sitting or getting some sleep during that time if ya decide to do this. If something like this interests ya & you're in the Detroit area, ya may wanna give em a call & see.

Take care,
Danny

Hahaha! I've done the T-Shirt runs before. Quite a few times. TB Bucs won the Playoffs, TB Bucs win the Superbowl, TB Lightning win the Stanley Cup, etc. Earlier this I did one when the Florida Gators won the championship.

Every time I've done one of these, it was always picking up directly at a print shop, as all of these items were last minute completion. That might have saved some time for you guys rather than having a "linehaul" pick them up and bring them to your dock. Plus, these were USUALLY set up with a staggered loading process, ie. Truck #1 at 4am, Truck #2 at 4:30am, truck #3 at 5am. So on and so on.

Glad you elected to sleep on site. 90% of the time, they are not ready on time.

Hey Jefferson 3000... who are you with? You were talking about those t-shirt runs that were all in Fl. I'm in Fl, can't find local work, got any tips? Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Craig,

Those T-Shirt runs weren't all in the same year, of course. I have done those throughout the years with a couple different companies. Check the air freight sector. I see you are in Daytona. You might find something out of that airport, but probably not much. Daytona falls under Orlando (MCO) jurisdiction. You will have both forwarders AND local cartage companies out of MCO that handle freight that comes in and out, both by air and by truck. That would be a good start.
