I was looking under the hood while I was at a truck stop and saw that the small in line fuel filter under the large canister fuel filter was a little rusty and decided to go over to the shop and buy a new one. I asked the guys in the shop about the in-line fuel filter and they said they didn't have any. I asked them how they do oil changes with a fuel filter change and they said they changed the canister. I looked at them and they looked at me and I walked back to my truck. Something tells me that many shops don't change this filter when the do oil and filter changes.

Beware.

I went down to the auto parts place and found a neat clear plastic in-line fuel filter with the proper 3/8 fittings. There are plastic coated wires near the location of the filter, so I wasn't concerned about the plastic fuel filter housing melting. It seems to work fine. If there is some obvious disaster that I am inviting please let me know.

Watching the fuel move through the element is far more interesting than you would think. In fact, I stopped at a rest area and opened the hood just to watch the green fuel move through the orange element and see if there was any crud on the element. When I got back in the truck there was a conversation going on the CB about who was going to help the guy just standing by his truck looking at at his engine. I started the truck and drove to the next rest area.

I cant believe you turned on the CB. Just kidding, you know I have beat that horse to death.

In answer to your question, not one place I have ever stopped at while on the road for a PM has ever changed that filter. Not one place.

I buy them at Freightliner and either tell them to do it or I simply do what you did and do it myself.
