My Brother has been watching EO with me quite often and he now wants to see about getting into Expediting. He is looking at a Cargo Van to start with. He was asking me questions I just dont know, so I told him I would post a few in here and get back with him. (sometimes I hate having the only computer in our family!!!!)

1. Can a person make a living with a cargo van?
2. Do many Companies sign on Cargo Vans?
3. Are regulations different for Cargo Vans than for Class D's ?
4. Are there different rates of pay for a Cargo Van than a Class D?

I wont list all of his questions but this will give him a start and something to go on.

Thanks

If he has been watching EO, would he not already know the answers to the questions you raise? Dig deeper into the forums and carrier profiles to find detailed info. Short answers are:

>1. Can a person make a living with a cargo van?

>2. Do many Companies sign on Cargo Vans?

Yes.

>3. Are regulations different for Cargo Vans than for Class
>D's ?

>1. Can a person make a living with a cargo van?

Yes K..he certainly can. There are many drivers out there, and on this board, who make a good living driving a van.

>2. Do many Companies sign on Cargo Vans?

Yes.. most companies have vans.. the problem is, they have so MANY of them, they don't hire them year round like trucks. Therefore, they will usually only hire once a year, or to simply replace vans they have lost for one reason or another.

>3. Are regulations different for Cargo Vans than for Class
>D's ?

Absolutely, no fuel taxes, no HOS, no scales.. except for a couple of states.

>4. Are there different rates of pay for a Cargo Van than a

>

Yes.. rates of pay are lower, but.. you also have less expenses, less regulation, and better fuel economy to offset that.

For example.. Class D trucks usually get anywhere from $1.07 to $1.35 on a normal load, where a van might get 75 cents to a high of $1.10 or so to run similar freight.

These rates vary from company to company.

No problem K, that's what we're here for. The answers to many questions can be found by entering key words in the "Search" feature at the top of the page.. if you can't find it, ask away! Chances are, someone here knows, and will be happy to help.

In the 60's people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, people take prozac to make it normal.[/font]

Good advice was given in both threads above. The archives in this forum and the other forums on this site provide some vital information to anyone wanting to get into this business today. They even remind us old dummies who we are and where we once came from (If we care to remember). I read them all the time!!! I think the best thing to do is to have your brother sit at your PC for a few hours or days to research and read all the past forum threads and he will find the answers to just about any question that may come to mind.

It has been said many times over in these forums that most companies are looking to hire on D units more so than vans. I do know one can make a better living with a D unit. I think it takes a special kind of person to make the big bucks in a van if you’re going to work for someone other than yourself.

AND to the other members that may be thinking IT!!!!!!! THE ONLY DUMB QUESTION IS THE ONE NOT ASK!!! Even though these questions have been ask many times over some people and new members don't know about the archives and we should still give help no matter how many times we have to repeat ourselves. LOL!!!

you can make it with a van, i just when from a c unit 16ft box
to a sprinter, and doing same miles and loads as before
and making more money as cost of everything is in 1/2
with a sprinter you would be able to carry high loads and
longer load and heavy load's than a ford or chevy or gmc vans
they are able to hold 2,000 to 2,500 and 2 pallets if you
put a sleeper in and with a sprinter you are able to carried
4 pallets and 3300 lbs with 13'9" of cargo space
if you put a sleeper in you only loose one pallet and would
be able to carried 3 pallets with know problem
plus door opening are higher and wider
