Positive Government Programs

We all hear about pork projects and huge wastefull Government spending programs but over the last few weeks I have been exposed to and impressed by one project that seems to be a win win.

I am no longer on the road but for the last 2months have been doing local deliveries in the Jax Fl area for Graybar Electric. One of my routine stops is the Jacksonville Job Corps Center. In talking with the Director he told me that they train young men and women that are on the edge, they have minor police records and usually are high school drop outs. This center teaches them to be electrician, contractor helpers,f/lift operators, warehouse workers, and the basic skills needed to compete in the Job market.

He went on to say the transformation in these kids and their attitudes is absolutely amazing. They wind up with $9-10 hour jobs to start out with and or the first time in their lives they have a purpose and a reason to get out of bed in the morning. More important is that they now get exposed to a whole new social class, mainly men and women that are responsible and are workers plus have family values. The success rate is about 90% and many of them come back to talk to new students.

It cost about $40 million to buy the land, erect the facilites and
fund this program. Not bad probably about one days petty cash fund in Irag

Wow - a success rate of 90%, that is awesome! That's the stuff I like to hear about, when people say Americans don't want to work - give people jobs that pay a living wage, and a way to learn the skills, and stand back! Thanks, Rich, for the positive news.:)

rich,
alot of those people may wind up in prison if not for the job corps. so if you look at the difference in training those people and then taking taxes compared to how much it costs to provide for a inmate for 5 years or longer it's most likely a lot cheaper way to go. i had friends in the marines who got their g.e.d. thru job corps.

another thing i have to say is. thank God for the VA.

What a great way to redirect welfare spending. I have no problem seeing my tax dollars spent in this way, as opposed to a handout.

BTW Rich, this was a very well written piece. Concise and informative. Where did you put yourself on that list?

Actually that was the Readers Digest condensed version, the original was 4,000 words as taught to me by a creative writer.
