On the road again

I worked for a contractor in 2012 for Fed CC for about 6 months but had to go back to local driving due to not making enough money solo. Been missing being on the road and my wife is thinking about getting her CDL B . Any advice on to whether teams do good and which carriers do you recommend and are getting the most miles ? Any advice is greatly appreciated

Within the last week, a fairly new, but very good FedEx team mentioned they made just over $98,000 in a DR.

No comments were made. I imagine that's towards the high side for driving somebody else's straight truck.

Thank you zorry we've been on the fence of vans or straight since she doesn't have her CDL but after reading many threads here we've decided to go the straight truck route but wanted to make sure we were making the right decision.

The right company is a tough call because it depends on the individual and their skill set. A rookie team might fair better at the Fed where an experienced team that wants more freedom or to run things as more of a business would do better with the Landstar system.

Expediter Services is a good place to start.
They are good with newbies. It will pay maybe a little less than some. They fact that you get paid, not cheated, is big while you learn the business.
They offer a lot of options later.
They advertise here.

Landstar is not typically an option for rookies..

A few weeks ago a friend called LEA and they had two straights in T-Val.

So, my guess is many experienced teams don't agree with your comments.

Every team I've personally spoke to that left Fed and stayed at LEA is happier.

They've experienced an income drop from lower freight volumes, but enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere.

So the switch from Fed to LEA has to depend on what's important to you.

The stress level at FedEx is sometimes overplayed. :)

Thanks Paul we realize it is hard to say for sure what company to go for as some are good for some people but not for others I just wanted to get some outside info from you guys who have been doing this for quite awhile to see if this is indeed what we want to do and if we should go back to the fed or try another company.

Hey Zorry I will check out the Expediter Services since I haven't really looked into them yet and I agree my stress level was up a time or two at fed but most times it went well just that the pay was not there for a solo with a contractor Thanks again

I did specify Landstar would be for an experienced team, definitely not the best even for experienced people that aren't familiar with the freight business.
You also know people that stayed at Landstar that made more, I have met some myself. Keep in mind when you make twice the $/mile you can run half the freight. :D Obviously just a joke but I have yet to talk to a single person that made more $/mile at any of the other companies. It sounds like your friend might have talked to an agent that had 2 T-val trucks, I don't know that for sure but it sure sounds odd.
