A couple of weeks ago,we stopped at a rest area in Tx.
I always try to avoid the people who are looking for hand-outs.
Sure enough, parked close to the restrooms was a broken-down car with a couple and three children.
They explained that their car had broken down and just needed enough money to get a part for it.I felt like an idiot but looking at the kids in the back seat, I figured "what the heck" and emptied out my pocket of about $25.00,that was all I had on me at the time.
Went back to the truck and loaded up on some snack foods and took them back up to the car, figure if I'm going to be an idiot, might as well,do a good job of it.
Imagine my surprise, yesterday morning when our son called to say that not only had the couple sent back the money we gave them but sent a heartfelt letter with it.
Seems like several different drivers had listened and dug into their pockets as well.
When she had asked me for our mailing address,I figured she would never use it...boy,was I wrong...so hoping I won't be so jaded from now on.This has sure made my day!:)

I'm glad to hear you had a good outcome but a major caution to anyone with this situation. They could have just as easily been harvesting addresses to pass along to a burglary gang. If they see what appears to be a husband/wife team they know it could be a month before they get back home to find their house cleaned out. I understand the idea of not being cynical but caution should still be the watchword.

Falconlady, thanks for the reminder that some people really ARE what they claim to be, and are honest, too - in your shoes, I'd have done exactly as you did.
Leo, you make a good point, one needs to be cautious about personal info - glad I have a PO Box for mail.

Cheri, good advice I have had a private mail box for 10 yrs. there are some places that won't send mail to a PO box but since a private box has a physical address it usually isn't a problem and being away from home I don't have to worry about strangers getting my home address and causing harm to my family
